How Does Transferring Ownership of a Boat Work?
When you buy a boat in Australia, it’s important to know the laws and regulations that apply. Each state has their own Department of Transport which handles all recreational boats, and commercial vessels are handled thru the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
GLI are a TMR dealer and can make the process of transferring a boat from one owner to another on your behalf, negating long waits at QLD Transport offices.
As a TMR Dealer, GLI will take care of all QLD to QLD registration transfers.
Commercial transfers can also be done in-house on your behalf for Certificate of Survey and Certificate of Operations vessels.
In Western Australia, both the seller and buyer must complete a Boat Transfer Form. The form must then be submitted to the Department of Transport within 15 days after purchasing the vessel.
In Victoria, any boat with an engine that may be used for propulsion must be registered. There is a transfer fee to change ownership of an engine-powered boat or yacht, which must be completed on the Vic Roads website.
Boat registration transfers in Tasmania are handled by Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST). Within 7 days of the sale, the seller and buyer must complete a Transfer of Ownership of Motor Boat/ Mooring form.
In New South Wales, buyers must apply to transfer the boat’s registration within 14 days of the purchase. This can be done in person, at a service centre or registry, or by mail. The seller must also complete the back portion of the Registered Owner section.
In South Australia, every vessel with an engine must be registered. This must be completed within 14 days of purchasing the motorboat. The SA government requires proof of ownership which includes a bill of sale and a completed transfer of registration application.
If you live in the ACT, the NSW Roads and Maritime Services will take care of your boat transfers. You must sign the Registered Owner section on the back of the registration certificate, then provide it to the buyer if you are selling the vessel.
If you live in the Northern Territory, you don’t have to register your boat. However, it is still important that you understand how to operate your boat safely and abide by recreational boating regulations.
